3. What is bad about zoos?

The enclosures are small for animals compared to the wild. Even though zoos make the enclosure big as much as they can, still it is unable to make like a wild habitat. Animals might run away from zoos by breaking the cages and this is dangerous for both animals and human. At cincinnati zoo, a boy fell into a gorilla's cage. The gorilla grabed the boy and ran around the cage and shot the gorilla to save the boy. In this case, the gorilla was just surprised or might tried to rescue the boy and the boy was just looking at the gorilla. Not only for animals but also for humans, zoos can be bad.

4. Are animals comfortable staying in zoozs?

Because the environment in zoos are not like the wild, it is stressful to live at zoos for animals. Animals repete the same movement when they feel stress; for example cheetah is pacing back and forth in zoo. Wild elephants live in a group and walk for miles a day but in zoos, they cannot walk that much and usually staying in one or two for one enclosure. As a result, elephants in zoos live about 16-18 years while the wild elephants live about 50-70 years.

Questions and Answers

I thought of 15 questions in my previous post, and I will answer 2 of those questions in this post.

1. What is the difference between protecting endangered animals and ordinary animals?

Answer:

I made some research on endangered animals, and was surprised to know that some animals were really in danger such as the Californian Condor, whose population is only 130 in the world.
These animals which are on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, are surely in danger! Most of them are decreasing due to climate change and illegal hunting. On the other hand, animals which are not in danger, are in other words massive in amount. Can you imagine the number 17863376000? That's the number of chickens that walk this planet. As you can see from this data, it is clear which needs protecting. But I also noticed that it is human beings who are reducing animals natural habitats. I think it is our duty to protect animals which we foolishly reduced with our own hands. But at the same time we must make sure of the borderlines between protecting and money making.

2. Are zoos really bad?

Answer:

To make matters difficult, I myself like zoos. But some people say that zoos are bad because it is against nature to keep animals locked up in cages. Some people say zoos are good for protecting endangered animals. But others say it is the infringement of the rights of freedom of animals. I could not come up with a compromising answer, but I think the heart of protecting animals is enough. The difference is if the people of the zoo want to really protect the animals or just want to get money. Of course, zoos are an industry. If people of the zoo could not get money from the tourists, they couldn't keep the zoo running. That's the most difficult point. But I hate the idea of killing animals which bred too much. They didn't wish to be born there. Why should they be killed? I think such things should not be allowed in zoos, and zoos which do such things are bad. I learned that surplus babies bred in zoos are often sold to circuses and even for slaughter. Babies might be a good attraction, but we must remember that most of them await a sad ending.

People with negative opinions about the topic

I played the part of a person who was against animal captivity called Morgan McCauley, and I will write down his thoughts and stance.

He believe that wild animals who live in nature belong to where they live, and should not be put into cages for our own entertainment. We may enjoy looking at rare animals or cute animal babies, but the animals will surely not enjoy their state. Animals in zoos suffer physically and mentally as their living environment will be so different from their natural habitats. Many animals in zoos show signs of distress such as pacing in their cages or rocking backwards and forwards repeatedly (Experts say that these behaviors are caused by stresses of being held captive.)This may be an extreme opinion, but presenting animals in zoos as living exhibits teaches children that animal can be manipulated in order to fulfill our own curiosity. From an an animal rights standpoint, we do not have the right to breed, capture and confine other animals, even if they are endangered. Some zoos even just kill the animals they bred too much. Also, one study says that elephants kept in zoos do not live as long as elephants that live in the wild. These are the main reasons why I'm against animal captivity.

First impressions about "Animal Captivity"

Hello, I will write down my understandings about the topic so far.

Many animals are put in zoos because they are disappearing from the wild but some people are against the idea of putting animals behind bars in cages. By surfing through the internet, I came to know that about 60 percent of the people think that animals should not be put in captivity such as in  zoos or aquariums. But other people argue that animals in danger should be protected from extinction by safe and peaceful man-made cages. I won't say which side I am on but I do think both sides have a point. Are animals happy in cages but don't have to worry about being eaten? Or would they rather live a life in freedom but have a risky one?

People have many ideas on this topic, and not all of them are positive. Whenever there are People for the idea, there are people with an argument. We would like to show you the ideas from both sides. We hope that you can get new ideas from this blog and share different ways of thinking!
